Newmont Training Bret Murphy briefed Presidents Council about GBC providing expanded training for Newmont. Newmonts goal is to train all of their maintenance employees. Newmont will be testing 765 employees to determine their skills in mobile, surface equipment, and technical areas. The testing will enable Newmont to determine what area of training each employee needs. GBC will provide the training. Newmont will have three locations for the training and will be committing about four million dollars. GBC has the infrastructure to do the training. We have diesel instructors already and would need to hire another electrical instructor. Newmont will donate some equipment and also leverage some equipment from other contractors. They want to make Elko their global training center. Carl Diekhans recommended that the payment for the instructor go through the Foundations endowment for new programs so we can count FTE. Mike McFarlane said that this might be a good time to focus on GBC making money rather than focusing on FTE. The Lone Tree facility may be as good as or better than the Fire Science Academy as a training site. It is more centrally located for all the mines. Newmont employees will be notified next week about this new comprehensive training program. Pahrump Discussion Paul Killpatrick asked Mike McFarlane how his visit to Pahrump went on Friday. Mike stayed in Beatty which is only an hour from Pahrump and was $45 per night. He reported the science faculty thought the Pahrump Valley High School labs were adequate for getting started. The High Tech Center utilities for gas and water are located in the ceiling. Al Daniels will be sending the plans to us. Mike met with the superintendent but was unable to meet with any of the high school instructors. The school district gets extra money from the government because of the test site. The county determines where the money goes. Mike was able to meet with the CEO of the hospital. The hospital will need fifty CNAs, LPNs and RNs. The hospital contains top of the line equipment. It will take a few years to get everything up and going. The hospital has people who are interested in participating/helping the college. There are about three accidents a day on the highway, so their fire emergency group is active. There is a need for trained paramedics. The CDL program has one paid person in Pahrump. Steve Stevenson will go down to Pahrump for the first CDL class which is scheduled to start at the end of this month. John Rice wanted PC to look over the draft of a press release about the survey that GBC is conducting and registration starting. We will be buying a display ad for the internet so well have our internet schedule on it. The article explains that we are still working on the live schedule which should be available in April. The survey will be polling adjuncts as well to see if they are interested in applying and that they can find an application on the GBC website. Danny Gonzales said the Nye County planning meetings have been very informative. Participation has been high. The next planning meeting will be this Friday. The branch campuses have been involved in the planning process. Carl Diekhans stated that Al Daniels is working on getting an inventory list to us. None of the equipment will be transferred until next year because of the accounting. Danny met with the student relations committee and Lynn Mahlberg to address student services as it pertains to the substantive change. Danny can prepare a draft for PC to look at for their areas of responsibility. He will work with John and pull in some of the information of the planning committee. Carl, Star Thomson, and Sonja Siebert have been working on a three-year projected budget that will be completed soon. Strategic Planning Danny Gonzales reminded the group that the master plan updates are due on April 15. Substantive Change Danny Gonzales reported that the substantive change will be submitted on April 15. Chancellors Visit on April 14 The Chancellor will be at GBC on April 14 and will be bringing some of his people. Annie Ulrich will be the contact person for the arrangements. He would like a tour and a question/answer meeting with faculty. He would like the questions beforehand. He is also willing to host a lunch. Master Calendar Mardell Wilkins needs to make some minor changes to the calendar. Faculty Senate Update Linda Uhlenkott reported that the faculty are trying to get the common course numbering lined out. President Council supports the finals week schedule approved by the senate. Danny Gonzales wanted to clarify that the adjunct evaluation process has not been to faculty senate. The workload issue will come up and will need to be addressed. The faculty senate update for their meeting on March 10, 2006 is as follows: Action UNRs Faculty Senate requested support of a change in wording in the faculty evaluation policy (see attached document). This change is being brought to the BOR during the March meeting. GBCs senate voted to support the change. Curriculum and Articulation brought forward a number of courses that needed approval for common course numbering or approval as new courses. C & A also approved two new programs, Radiology Technology and Energy Efficiency Program, and requested Senate approval of these. Senate voted to approve all course changes and the new programs. Faculty Evaluation requested that senate approve the new self-evaluation matrix being piloted by the English department, so that it could be used by other departments. Senate voted to approve the matrix. Academic Standards asked for a vote on the finals schedule beginning fall 2006. It was proposed that the 16th week be a standard schedule as all other weeks of the semester. It would be a finals week, but finals would be held during the regularly scheduled times. Students supported this move, and in a roll call vote, the proposal was approved 33-14. Information The Bylaws Committee has met and begun work on a shared governance document. Compensation and Benefits brought forward a set of guidelines for determining plus days on faculty contracts; senate voted to send the guidelines back for further revision of language. Chancellor Rogers is scheduled to visit campus on Feb. 14. He will be bringing several others with him. He plans to arrive at 9:30 a.m.; he has asked for a tour of campus. The chancellor will be hosting lunch for any faculty who wish to attend; lunch will be 11:00 and will be followed by a Q & A session with faculty. The chancellor is open to a community forum and has stated that he will stay in Elko for as long as necessary. Miscellaneous Carl Diekhans reported that next week we will start reviewing positions for Pahrump. Peter Klem needs to meet with Carl and Mike to talk about what positions are needed in Pahrump. Danny Gonzales reported he attended the NSHE economic and research development committee meeting recently and gave a campus update. (0678BCh( 8 F G h i ' * 2 K W Z + - G H K k r y > ?
