Pahrump Discussion Paul Killpatrick invited Pat Warren to Presidents Council to discuss her visit to Pahrump last Thursday. She met with Al Daniels, site administrator, Cheryl Gregersen, assistant manager and with the director of the hospital. The meetings went well. We will be offering the drivers education program in Pahrump on March 20. CCSN didnt offer it so we would not be taking it away from CCSN. CCSN should be contacted as a courtesy that we will be offering the class. The Elko Daily Free Press came up with a survey a couple of years ago to see what the community wanted in terms of continuing education, and we should do something like that in Pahrump. Well use the information from the survey to develop courses based on their needs. John Rice has been in contact with the Pahrump Valley Times and they are willing to work with us on a survey. We would conduct the survey online. John will meet with Garry Heberer today to develop the survey questions. There is also a 2003 Student Needs Survey that will John will share. A good place to market the new schedule is the Pahrump Business Expo in April and the fall festival in Pahrump. Very little community service has been done in Pahrump; the last class was yoga offered in 2004. We can respond more quickly to continuing education. We need to get community leaders to do a lecture or teach a class. There are a lot of motorcycles in Southern Nevada so a motorcycle safety class has great potential. Pat said there is a grant for rural motorcycle training for equipment and storage, but the money will not be available until 2008. However, they have a mobile unit that we could use for free in the winter months. The Nye County Sheriffs Department has been trying to get the training there. Pahrump has been offering a one credit computer usage class. Pat isnt sure whether we want to continue this or not. Pat got a tour of the new hospital. The delivery rooms are a one-stop shop. The hospital will have a need for ACLS training, pediatric advance life support training and lab technician training. The hospital has classrooms downstairs, and they would be willing let us use them if available. We should contact AHEC to request installing an IAV in one of those rooms. There is a great deal of accidents on that highway, so EMS courses are likely to be popular. There is a large Hispanic population and a big demand for ABE/ESL programs. Survival English for supervisors would be a good fit also. We can offer some of our online language courses. There may be an interest in horse clinics and dog obedience classes. Al Daniels suggested cultivating a relationship with MAP because there are seven MAP recruiters in Las Vegas that do contract training in the business community. Paul Killpatrick said that Pat is a great ambassador for the college and thanked her for her update. Paul said that people really want to make this work. The Nye County Planning meetings have been well attended. Womens Self Defense Class Paul Killpatrick reported that Carolyn Ross from Great Basin Bank has requested the use the GBC Theater to offer a womens self protection class. The class would be free to the community, faculty and staff. If the theater is available, Mardell will reserve it for the training. Strategic Planning No report. Watts Line Carl Diekhans reported that there is no cost saving to the college in using the Watts line (these are the 40, 41, 42 lines for long distance). GBC would actually save $400 a month if we go with a regular long distance phone charges. Pahrump long distance charges may be attached to the SCS lines. GBC will keep the Watts line through the end of this month and then go to regular long distance. Theater Utilization Form Carl Diekhans presented a more detailed Theater Utilization form for approval. The theater director signature needs to be put on the form. John Rice says we need to look more closely at what we charge and the priority is for college events. Presidents Council approved the Theater Utilization form with the addition of the theater directors signature. Berg Hall Remodel Carl Diekhans reported that the carpet in Berg Hall Conference Room will be installed on April 1. The doors will be removed to get refinished. Master Calendar Mardell Wilkins is still working on the master calendar. She is missing a few important dates. Please get those to her so that she may add them to the master calendar. Transfer Policy Update Linda Uhlenkott presented the GBC Transfer Policy for approval. Presidents Council approved the policy. Miscellaneous Linda Uhlenkott brought up common course numbering changes to the non transfer courses. Mike McFarlane says to continue the way weve been doing it. Theres no need to be overly concerned about the non-transfer courses. Paul Killpatrick reported that GBC employees will be working the summer schedule again this year. The summer schedule will start June 1, 2006 and end on July 31, 2006. We will be working Monday Friday from 7:00 a.m. 3:30 p.m. with hour for lunch. There will be options for those who do not want to work the summer hours. This work schedule does not affect the summer classes. Pat Warren inquired if we were going to have summer classes in Pahrump. Mike says if we do, we want to keep it easy and maybe do some continuing education classes or some online classes. Carl Diekhans said the LCB tour will not be stopping in Winnemucca on May 2 after all. They will only be in Elko on May 3 in the morning. Well probably have a continental breakfast and lunch with them. In the afternoon we will tour the clinic with AHEC. Lynn Mahlberg stated that the next College Council is scheduled for Wednesday, March 24 from 1:00 3:30 p.m. Some of the topics will be the Student Success Research program that Dr. Dorothy Moore has been working on, the employee recognition program, and the timeline for grant-in-aid. Lynn Mahlberg stated that on April 5, USA funds will be here presenting student success strategies and student retention. On April 4 Dr. Henry Villanova from the NSHE system office will be here to talk about student retention. Mike McFarlane asked for a list of volunteers so he can start scheduling the summer advising. The rate of pay for summer advising will be approximately $180 a day or $90 for a half day.
