Legislative Issues Paul Killpatrick reported that Senator Dean Rhoads requested that he and Carl Diekhans attend the Senate Finance Committee on February 26 to testify about our partnerships regarding the Elko Clinic. Paul is very hopeful that this may generate some appropriations for the health sciences facility. There is another Joint Finance Committee meeting on March 9. The Chancellors Round Table meeting in Elko on March 7 has been cancelled. The Integrate system is a long ways from being finalized. Paul said that the presidents all favor an increase of $2 for community colleges and $4 for universities in student fees to pay for the system. Welding Expansion Bret Murphy has previously talked to Presidents Council about expanding the welding department. Because of prohibitive cost of relocating utilities, the only possibility to expand the welding facilities is to add on to the end of the building which would take up part of the parking lot. Carl stated that we did talk a little to Public Works back in June, but have done nothing more. It would add about 4,000 square feet. We should have money that is available because of the loan that GBC has recently paid off for the Berg Hall Expansion; 200k per year in a ten year contract at 5% interest would be 1.5 million dollars. The building would also have to be equipped: 18 new welding booths at $3,000/per booth. We will have to hire another person for the welding department because of the Newmont training. Another possibility would be to look into constructing a steel building in the area where we park all of the old school buses. Presidents Council recommended preparing a contract for some conceptual plans to be drawn up for a welding expansion, construction of a steel building to house welding department, and expansion in Berg Hall for student services. Policies for Review Library Services was reviewed by Presidents Council for the first time today. Presidents Council recommended that the audio-visual services should be under computer services or under interactive video scheduling. Carl and Mike will meet to determine which area to move the audio-visual services. It does not belong under library services. 3.2-4, 3.6 Library Services Carl and Mike will discuss where to put the audio-visual services. Presidents Council approved this policy. Five-Year Review Tenure Faculty bring back to the next PC meeting. Regents Scholar Presidents Council approved this policy. Regents Academy Paul Killpatrick reported that GBC has two openings for faculty to attend the Regents Academy. Please think of recommendations for new faculty members to attend this training academy held on May 31 June 2, 2007. Used Textbooks Carl Diekhans received information from the Used Textbook Association of Nebraska. They represent the used textbook industry serving university and college bookstores across the country and advocate the role and value of used textbooks in the marketplace. They provide information about unnecessary new editions, bundling, textbook rental programs, and legislation. Linda Uhlenkott will pass a copy out at Faculty Senate. Linda will review and send a copy to the Faculty Senate chair and a copy to Jane Nichols. Miscellaneous John Rice reminded everyone about the Foundation Dinner Dance on February 24, 2007 at the Convention Center. Dean Heller has not confirmed back if he will be attending the dinner dance. Linda reported that prior to the Faculty Senate meeting on Friday, there will be a meeting on possible changes to our health insurance and domestic partners issue Paul Killpatrick attended a conference last week at Salt Lake Community College. Stacie Potter was a presenter on personality types and the Wizard of Oz leadership module. Stacie did a fantastic job.
