Grant-in-Aid Lynn Mahlberg informed Presidents Council that there is a discrepancy in the GBC Grant-in-Aid policy for adjuncts. Our policy states that part-time employees and their spouse/dependents are eligible for grant-in-aid which is in direct conflict with the Board of Regents policy. Somehow this change made it into our policy handbook and should not have without BOR approval. Presidents Council agreed that this would be a good benefit for the adjuncts and would like to continue it. Ms. Mahlberg will rewrite the policy and bring back to Presidents Council for approval. We will then have to submit it to the BOR for their approval at the April meeting. Student Services Update Lynn Mahlberg reported on the reorganization in Student Services. Ms. Mahlberg attended a Department Chair meeting on Friday, and they were receptive to Tammy Staley being the Recruitment Coordinator for spring. The Career Center will continue with career advising, and Human Resources will help pick up the slack by handling the student workers. Julie Byrnes will be responsible for accommodation requests. Jan King will be the degree auditing specialist. Ms. Mahlberg reported that enrollments are still down by 124. The College News is coming out in one week and will have all of the classes listed that were not in the schedule. An interactive meeting that addresses the enrollment issue is scheduled for today. Some ideas to help with the low enrollments were discussed. For instance, what has the employment rate at the mines been for the last six months? Dr. Killpatrick said that a meeting is being scheduled with Newmont and Placer Dome to discuss vocational programs being offered in Winnemucca. He is also meeting with the Elko High School Superintendent to talk about educational transition. Leave Tracking Erik Seastedt reported that the leave tracking is now computerized. You can request a copy of your leave sheet at any time by calling the Human Resources department. They will be able to email you a copy of the spreadsheet. The HR department will no longer be providing quarterly verification sheets. A new Leave Request Form has been implemented that is better suited for leave tracking. Support for the Tsunami Victims Item deferred. Miscellaneous Presidents Council discussed the problems with adjuncts not wanting to sign the loyalty oath. Erik Seastedt sent Susie Sanders the statutes and legalities regarding the loyalty oath and she was somewhat mollified. He will be mailing information about the oath to all adjuncts. Danny Gonzales gave an update on the in-service activities for the week. The focus of the week will be assessment. There will be a discussion about the Academic Affairs reorganization and faculty workload issues on Thursday. Mike McFarlane further reported on the Academic Affairs organizational structure. He requested Kathy Schwandt to put this on the Faculty Senate agenda as an action item. We would like to get a recommendation from the Senate before February. We are currently looking for trainers to instruct on how to have effective on-line classes. We want to have a class for those who have never taught an on-line class and one for those who have taught on-line classes. Carl Diekhans reported on the budget. If GBC can average 1350 FTE for the year our budget would be approximately $15,200,000 which is $1.5 million less than what was projected for FY06. The shortage will reflect on whether we can have any expansions. Increasing our FTE is crucial. Danny Gonzales reported that all funds from the professional development account have been awarded. We have set aside $7,000 for the Community College Conference in April. (28:< = > J M Z ] c d ?
