Intramurals in Spring 2006 Dan Jones and Julie Smith provided Presidents Council with an update on the intramural sports for spring 2006. Dan Jones said that the participation is up and down depending on the sport. He said that we needed to involve more people. Dan received a request from housing to open the gym on Friday and Saturday nights for students. He had a meeting with Student Life and H.A.B.I.T.A.T. and they came up with the concept of Friday Night Follies. Each Friday will have a sport activity scheduled. The scheduled activity will begin at 4:00 p.m. and go until 6:00 p.m.; after that it will be open gym. Lynn said that our student life is very important; activity is contagious. Consistency and organization is important for success. Julie Smith, who has a degree in PE and experience in coaching, said that this is a battle that needs to be fought. She said that we need to give student ownership to this. A student liaison has been assigned to organize the activities for each of these dates. Just having it scheduled as Friday Night Follies will help. SGA will provide pizza and pop for each of the Fridays. Danny Gonzales stated that it would really be great to find a grass area designated for these types of sports. Carl Diekhans said that in order to put in grass, we would need $50,000 to $100,000. We might be able to collaborate with the school district. The school district wants to put in a soccer field at an estimated cost of $1million. Julie Smith said that there is a need for a student activities director. The students are in the process of redoing the recreation room. They have added an air hockey table, pool table, and leather furniture. They have been offered two video arcade games to use in the room. PC talked about the different kinds of music for the juke box. Pahrump Discussion Paul Killpatrick said that the language for the Board of Regents agenda item request for the Pahrump deal has been submitted for approval at the January meeting. He said that after much jockeying, language that was agreeable to both CCSN and GBC was finally established. Basically, the language states that CCSN and GBC both have Nye County as their service area. GBC would offer the traditional credit classes. GBC and CCSN can both offer workforce training and contract classes. CCSN can offer credit but for contract purposes only. CCSN wanted to keep this option available to them for the future. The Regents need to approve the concept. We still have time to draft the language for the MOUs. Dr. Killpatrick is more concerned with the scope of operation: hiring staff, facilities, courses offered, and holding students harmless. Carl Diekhans said that we need to bring in Brian Burk with the LCB to address the transfer of money between institutions because legally we cannot do that. There are some ways that we have to go to make this work legally as far as the money is concerned. Lisa Heise said we still have to address the Foundation situation. Danny Gonzales read that Pahrump is limited in office space and is already running out of space for their public offices. He suggested that maybe we can all work towards a compromise with the limited space. Carl Diekhans stated that there is $500,000 available to bring infrastructure to the 280 acres we have in Pahrump. John Rice discussed the organization of the city. Pahrump is not incorporated and has little planning. Maybe we can assist them in that process. Danny Gonzales stated that when he visited Pahrump, it appeared that they didnt have a relationship with the Nye County Economic Diversification Authority. Chancellors 2006 Goals Paul Killpatrick requested Presidents Council prepare a response to the nine goals that the Chancellor gave to the NSHE presidents to adopt. Dr. Killpatrick suggested watching the Chancellors State of the System address to refresh your memory. Please send your responses to John Rice on Wednesday; we will review on Thursday and submit the final response on Friday, January 13, 2006. 5. Miscellaneous Danny Gonzales stated that faculty will be returning tomorrow at 8:00 a.m. Humberto Munoz and Eliseo Gonzalez will be doing the cooking for Thursdays Welcome Back Luncheon. The luncheon will be located in the Diesel Shop. Danny says we have a good schedule for the in-service activities, and everything is good to go. Carl Diekhans recommended the Leave Request Form be changed back to a simpler form. The change was a suggestion from Lucina Lewis. Presidents Council agreed to use the format that UNR uses, but that we must continue to use old forms until they are depleted. Carl Diekhans stated that he has researched our utility bills; over half of utility budget has been spent in the first five months of the fiscal year. We have gotten all the breaks with the power companies that we can get, so he predicts that we will be considerably over budget in that area. Danny Gonzales reported that GBC has received a renewed commitment from Placer Dome for the Indian Archive. Joe Duccette is working on some editing and putting in a signature page and credits. PC would like to have a preview of the webpage soon. Carl Diekhans reported that John Love is here from the system office to do a host audit. John will be looking at our host accounts. Linda Uhlenkott reported that Chancellor Rogers will at GBC to meet with faculty on March 10, 2006. Regent Leavitt wants to come for a campus visit on February 10, 2006. Linda Uhlenkott stated that forming a variance committee to review the hiring of hard- to-fill positions was taken out of the Hard to Hire Policy. She reported that the senate chairs will be asking that the original language about the variance committee be returned to the code. Carl Diekhans said it will affect the timing of when you can make an offer. Mike McFarlane stated that the system wants us to take positions off the list once they are filled. But if we take the positions off the list when filled, and then they leave the position shortly after, what do we do then? The position is still a hard to fill position. We need to find out from Carla Hensons to why the variance committee was dropped from the policy. Lynn Mahlberg stated that high school senior graduations are coming. She stated that Tammy Staley has been researching what GBC can give for the graduation parties. She recommended purchasing fifteen 128 MB flash drives @ $25/each. Lynn feels the expense is justifiable as recruitment and marketing, but the expense would have to come out of a non-state account. Lynn Mahlberg has a meeting on the Access Grant this afternoon. Lynn Mahlberg stated that College Goal Sunday will be held on January 29, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. We had over fifty people attend College Goal Sunday last year. The program is expanding each year. College Goal Sunday is a state program and is controlled at that level. This years sites are Winnemucca and Elko. Dr. Killpatrick would like to confirm who will be advising during the summer. Linda Uhlenkott will bring up at Faculty Senate. We want to put advising information in summer schedule. Carl Diekhans reported that Dorinda Friez is contacting other vendors to bring in other ideas and cost estimates for the remodeling of Berg Hall Conference Room. We want to wait until after the Campus Budget meeting on January 17 to begin refinishing the table and credenza. John Rice reported that the College News is coming out the first week of classes. The College News will have late starting classes, community service classes, and an article about students who have gone away to college only to come back to GBC. Lisa Heise reported that the Foundation has exceeded their goal for sponsorships for this years dinner dance. Dance lessons started this week, and Yong Pratt is the dance instructor. The class quickly filled up so she is doing another section. Patty Jones talked to Rotary last week, and Yong demonstrated ballroom dancing. Paul Killpatrick reported that there is an interactive meeting today with the Council of Presidents about the proposed integrative computing system. The system will create efficiencies and greater reporting capabilities. Paul Killpatrick reported that there is a meeting on January 10 at 3:00 p.m. at City Hall that will address the problems at the Elko Regional Airport.
